The Friday Hangover
I am ahead of my time. Apparently, Scott Boras, who must read this website, wants to add a new stat to baseball, the "exceptional play". This is obviously a blantant attempt to copy style points. Maybe I should copy him and gouge professional sports franchises by overpricing my clients. All I need now are some clients!
Week Eight Random Thoughts:
Wow, did Team Double Stuff look awful on Sunday. While every other team seemed to suck one game, but pick things back up for the next, Double Stuff really shit the bed. In one game, it was the inside game that failed them, and in the other, the offense followed suit. I really like this team, but I've never watched a game and thought a team was more likely to give up an assist than to record a double play on a missed shot...at least before watching them against Jukebox Hero. Things don't get easier this week as they face the Nappy Headed Ho's and Kathleen Turner Overdrive, two teams looking to catch Hot Fuzz for the National Conference title and SBL regular season title.
I would like to apologize to PJ & the Ladies for even posing a question speculating that they miss out on the final playoff spot in favor of Jukebox Hero. Although I thought Jared Clayton only shot homers...and Billy sucked at offense. I guess I was wrong on both. I doubt they win out to finish at 10-10 but I wouldn't want to be the team who plays them in the first round of the playoffs.
Another team who has found its groove is the Sparkling Wiggles. First, they took advantage of a Nappy Headed Ho's team, who simply came out flat, and creamed them. Then, they struggle for awhile against Hot Fuzz, but thanks to Bryan Frankovich playing sub-par and a hanful of Mikey Moroco dumb things, they hold on to cap a perfect week. Nate Tomko predicts this team to run the table and finish 14-6, a record which would probably be good enough to clinch that all important bye to the finals. Given the way they've played recently, I'm not so sure sitting out for two weeks wouldn't be more of a curse than a blessing for this team.
If you want to know the two teams who need that bye the most, look no further than the two teams the Sparkling Wiggles just beat. One, because of attendence issues. The other could use some time to regroup, espeicially if they finish the season playing as poorly as they have. I'll let you figure out which is which.
Once again, the Nappy Headed Ho's played like crap in their first game and rebounded in their second. Unlike the past couple of weeks, someone took advantage of it. Despite their winning record and being in good shape for the playoffs, the offense has been inconsistent. They can't have that if they want to be serious contenders.
Looking back at my midseason all-star teams, the only change I'd make is inserting Pat Lackey and taking out one of his brothers, pretty much agreeing with Nate Tomko's all-star teams. Although I'd hate the possibility of leaving a team as good as KTO only one all-star, it must be said that Terry Shernisky has carried the team all season and nobody else on the team is all-star worthy. Also, if there were a "comeback player of the year award", the eldest Lackey would be a clear favorite to win.
As for the ROTY race, Bob Spohn may have fallen out. The way I see it, it is now back to a two-horse race with Gavin St. John back in front of Tonly Mastrian, but only slightly. If you want a more useless stat than style points, look at "weird-outs", which Mastrian surely would have collected plenty of while he pranced around during the JBH/NHH game. I suppose he'll just have to settle for some negative style points.
In response to something Mac posted earlier this week, I don't believe offenses are down too much. I even think they're better than last year. Comparing this season to 2005, you can say offenses are down. While I agree that harder hoops and lower BASEketball IQs are partially to blame, IQs aren't the only thing that's down in this league. Team chemistry, which could be derived from intelligence or vice versa, is also down. Since teams were chosen at random this year (at least for the most part) instead of letting captains select who they wish to play with exclusively through the draft or pre-draft, they might not get the best fit for their team. And perhaps, some players just perform better with certain individuals on his or her squad. I also can't stress enough how much attendence plays a role. It's hard to build team chemistry when you sport a different lineup (sometimes two) every week!
