SBL 2004, WEEK 7 JULY 11 HOFFA CENTRE JUKEBOX HERO 4 HOOSIER DADDY 18 (6 INNINGS) with both teams looking at three-game days and sitting at opposite ends of the sbl standings, hoosier daddy and jukebox hero looked to set the tone for the day with a win in the first game of the week. jukebox hero, consistinng of danielle hennon, sean hood," big whitey" ben elliott, kip corbett and newcomer kassy brown, came out red-hot in the top of the first, hitting 4 straight to drive in 3 before 3 consecutive misses ended the early rally. hoosier daddy answered right back with 2 in the home half of the inning, and continued to pur on runs in the second and third as jukebox lost their stroke. by the time jukebox got their next hit, and eventually next/last run in the 6th, they were already in a 7-run hole. the k-y connection dropped 8 more on thge yellow mesh army in the bottom of the 6th thanks to back to back grand slams by dennis lackey and bryan frankovich, finally giving them the 12-run cushion they needed to get out of the laugher of a game. for the winners, frankovich finished with 6 hits in 9 at-bats and drove in 9. lackey drove in 7 on 5 of 9 marksmanship. jukebox was led by kip corbetts 2 for 4 outing. XDEATHX/WSAC 7 THE SERBIAN JEW DOUBLE BLUFFS 8 shelly goodpastor's 2-out solo homer in the bottom of the 9th completed the bluffs comeback from 6 down and set an new sbl record for consecutive wins by a team with 12. with the usually reliable nate tomko turning in a brutal 1 for 8 performance, the sj2b looked lost for the first 5 innings of the game. only captain matt mcclelland was able to hit any shot over the first 4 innings. xdeathx, meanwhile, took an early lead by crossing the plate 3 times in the top of the first thanks to a kip corbett 2-run jack. the strong smoker defense, as always led by jon biddle, kept the lead well into the game as the purple people eaters couldn't get their shots to fall. with things beginning to look grim, consecutive hits by goodpastor, mcclelland and jon olsavsky finally got the double bluffs on the board in the 6th. the smokers answered right back with 1 in the seventh, but the bluffs had finally found their stroke. three runs in each the 7th and 8th stanzas knotted the game at 7 heading to the ninth, when a tomko double play and a jon biddle dumb thing set the stage for shelly's big shot in the bottom of the 9th. mcclelland finished with 6 hits in 8 at-bats with 4 rbi to pace the winner. goodpastor hit 6 of 9 and tomko tipped in 6 double plays. for xdeathx, jon biddle tipped in a new sbl record 9 double plays, one every inning, while hitting 5 of 8 shots and driving in 2. corbett drove in 3 runs. HOOSIER DADDY 31 TEAM DONKEY PUNCH 32 a terrific comeback by the young hoosier daddy squad on the homecourt fell just short as the highest scoring game in sbl history came down to one run. the red-hot team donkey punch came out strokin', building a 5-2 lead after one thanks to the terrific hitting of jared clayton. innings of 5, 1, and 4 followed in the next three innings, respectively. meanwhile, hossier daddy was having trouble sinking shots, and the score stood at 15-6 after 5 innings with donkey punch threatening to end it in 6. the looked to do just that by scoring 10 runs in the bottom of the 5th. 4 consecutive hits by rodemoyer, moroco, clayton and pat lackey had extended the lead to 12, and kurt rodemoyer was given permission to take the grand slam. he swished it home, then donkey punch laid on 3 more runs for a ten-run frame and a 25-6 lead. hoosier daddy wasn't about to lay down, however, and they made 12 consecutive shots in the bottom of the 6th, including 3 homers by brandon "one-dimensional, version 2.0" mckendry to claw back into the game. after holding d.p. scoreless in the bottom of the innning, hoosier crossed twice more in the 7th and the donkey punch lead had eroded to 4. by the bottom of the 8th, the comeback had turned the game in the favor of the ugly brown uni's, and they were actually up to heading into the home half of that inning when donkey's 5 runs put the game away. a mikey chang homer miss was the misfired bullet of the greatest shootout in sbl annals. for the losing hoosiers, mckendry hit 8 of 16 with 7 homers and 15 rbi. mikey chang nail;ed 10 of 15 shots, drove in 5, and collected a psyche out, a double play, and an assist. bryan frankovich and dennis lackey both contributed 9 hits, the latter sriving home 8. for the victorious donekyu punch, who remained at second in the league heading into their big showdown with the sj2b, jared clayton hit 11 of 13 shots with 4 homers, 16 runs batted in, 5 double plays and an assist. kurt rodemoyer added 2 homers, 9 hits and 6 runs batted in and pat lackey drove in 5 on 8 of 14 shooting. JUKEBOX HERO 8 THE SHORT BUS ALL-STARS 11 the all-stars of teddy gilliland did everything they could to try and give the game to the sbl's worst team, but jukebox refused to take it from them in a snoozer of a contest. i honestly can't remember any of the things in the book happening except ted shooting 30 homers and making 2. i bet if lee nespor had played more the game would have been a lot better. anyway, most of short bus' scoring came in the middle innings while jukebox really didn't do anything. billy whiteshoes hit 6 of 13 shots, drove in 4, knocked down a homer and tipped in 5 double plays in a winning effort. gilliland drove in 5. for the losers...hmm....danielle hennon hit half of 8 shots and katie kelly drove in 2. seth salcedo of hoosier daddy drilled 4 of 7 and drove in 4 runs. TEAM DONKEY PUNCH 4 THE SERBIAN JEW DOUBLE BLUFFS 18 (6 INNINGS) the game everyone had been waiting for was the most lopsided contest of the week. the bluffs, perhaps looking to make a point against the talkin'est team in the sbl following their worst performance since week 1, shut down the dynamic donkey punch offense in the top of the first, then drilled 10 straight shots to build an 8-0 lead after one and never looked back. a one run second for d.p. was followed by nate tomko's 2-run shot in the bottom of that innning. and when clayton's posse crossed 3 times in the third, another 8-run inning came from the hot-shooting hands of the double bluffs. that was the end of the scoring as the last 2 innings of the game featured nothing but defense, and the game was mercifully ended after the top of the 6th. tomko finished with 7 hits in 9 at-bats with a trifecta of homeruns and 8 rbi with a psyche-out and 3 double plays. jon olsavsky drove in 5 with 2 homers and a psyche out. both matt mcclelland and shelly goodpastor nailed 6 of 8. for the losers, who dropped to 9-6, pat lackey hit 3 of 6 and turned 3 double plays. XDEATHX/WSAC 7 THE SHORT BUS ALL-STARS 2 perhaps the game won't be more exciting with lee nespor in it. we'll skip the boredom and go straight to the stats. bill weisberg hit 3 of 8 with 5 double plays for the losers. kip corbett hit 4 of 8 and drove in 2 for the winners, and jon biddle tipped in 4 double plays and collected a psyche-out. let's never let these teams play each other again.
