HOOSIER DADDY

pre-draft: the k-y connection of mikey moroco and bryan "mailman pants jr" frankovich made the first acquisition of the season within 3 days of being named captains.  by signing former rookie of the year winner and player of the year candidate mark tarkanick, hoosier daddy got the superstar player  and leadership they needed.

pick 6: pat lackey was selected with hoosier daddy's first pick, but was quickly traded away for a player that was still on the board when lackey was selected.  odd. in exchange for pat (and nolan vujovic, who was drafted 3 rounds later), frank and moroco recieved dennis lackey, horrible shooter/psyche-out artist extraordinaire.

pick 11:  forfeited.  hey, they had 2 captains.

pick 18phil jones, taken in the 4th round, should supply hoosier daddy with a nice leadoff hitter.  in his rookie year in 2002, jones was a .500 batter.  since that time, he's taller and about 50 lbs heavier, making him more of a well-rounded player.  unfortunately, his status for the summer is very much in doubt, but in my opinion, he was worth the pick at 18.

pick 22nolan vujovic, all 8'9 of him, would have given this rather short team a good helpin' of height.  but since he's only gonna be around for a few weeks this summer at best, mike and bryan dealt him (along with pat lackey) to team clayton for dennis lackey.

pick 31brandon mckendry.  i know nothing about this kid.  i think his first name is brandon, and i think he hangs out with jon bidd and ben elliott.  so he probably smokes and steals stuff.

pick 34:  a gamble even this late, steve mentrek was a big part in the milf hunter's early exit from the playoffs last season, since he was one of their best players and he was off tokin' up.  but, i see a pattern developing here:  in 2001, mentrek let his team down by never showing up.  in 2002, he was there nearly every single game, and was an mvp finalist.  2003, nothing.  i'd say he's due for a good year.

pick 42:  if you're gonna take one guy that misses games to smoke weed, might as well take his partner in crime.  jeremy battyani goes to hoosier daddy here, probably so mikey isn't the tiniest one on the team.

pick 44
:  adding jeff meyers here was perhaps the best move made by this team all draft long.  a beast of an inside player who's proven he can win will be an asset to this team, even if it's only for a few weeks.

gradeD
trading away two of your first 3 picks for dennis lackey?  edag!  when your hopes are riding on the attendance of steve mentrek, you know you haven't faired well in the draft.  the connection should have kept pat lackey.  a starting lineup of pat, tark mikey and bryan would be ultra-competitive.
PJ & THE LADIES

pre-draftnespor acquired shelly goodpastor 3 days before the deadline with no intentions of her wearing lady red come opening day.  the tactical wizard with no desire to win games quickly dealt her to mclelland's squad for 3 early round draft picks, allowing him to pick up nearly every player he wanted.

pick 3:  duping the league as a whole, nespor took andy esenwein with his first second-round pick.  for weeks, the sbl was to believe esenwein would spend the summer in the army, meaning he could attentd roughly zero games.  the ruse worked, and the ladies locked up a deadly homerun hitter with a sudden surge of intent to attend that could single handidly carry this team of misfits to the promise land.

pick 7big rando knight beotch, a 4 year member of this team, went in round 2.  nearly taken by hoosier daddy one pick earlier, only a beat-down of mikey moroco by rando himself could prevent the move.  a world-class joker, rando is a capable player with 3 straight all-star appearances under his shortening belt.  a perfect, if not obvious pick at this spot.

pick 10lenny crist, who was bound to end up on this team, was taken at 10.  not a good pick by pj, who surely could have gotten him much, much later.  lenny is a decent player at best, and it's likely he won't show up very often due to his constant squabbles with the sbl office.

pick 14sam lynn, over the course of 2 years, has gone from a ptp-er in the sbl innner circle to a sasquatch like characterwho some claim to have seen in the last year, but have no real evidence of any such encounter.  should she come in 2004, the ladies get an actual lady who can play the game and will fit their style nicely.

pick 15:  might as well just write down jen gavala and greg lackey here, because that's essentially who the ladies got.  dennis lackey was the actual pick, and it seemed that the off-the wall antics of fuzzy head would be perfect wearing red, but he was shipped to clayton for the unknown greg and unaroundtheseparts gavala.

pick 19
brendon radcliffe.  coach pj was mega-juiced about this pick.  i've never met this kid, but aside from the tiffany crytzer fiasco, pj's always been a good judge of character.  we'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

pick 26
:  selecting cassie pyle here did a number of things.  it gave the ladies another court.  it ensured pj that his girlfriend wouldn't be on someone else's (big ted's) team.  it gave them mac.  and it gave them more than one genetic lady.

pick 33
:  staring at the draft board for a good 3 minutes debating on wether to select joel lepak and his off-the wall antics or sbl co-founder and 2 year m.i.a.-er hviz, the crafty nespor was left with only one choice.  and he drafted joel hvizdak.

pick 48:  "the shirtless jackass" tim meyers, unreliable as he is, is the best double play man in the game.  you can't go wrong with taking him at 48.

gradeB
shockingly, pj put together one of the better drafts of the day.  nabbing esenwein and rando after convincing the league they wouldn't be around was exactly what nespor was looking for when he sent shelly to mclelland for the extra picks.  however, lenny at 10 and getting rid of pefect lady dennis lackey have to push him down to a B.  selecting joel hvizdak w
HORSES COCK

pre- draft: voracious attempts to sign nate tomko and steve mentrek went unsuccesful for ted gilliland.  one of them was fotunate for the team, one was fortunate for me.  both were unfortunate for...

pick 1
: billy weisberg, for the second time in the 4 year history of the sbl draft, was taken with the top overall pick.  his being a solid player with a heart of gold may have caught up with him as ted, as you'll see as we proceed thru his picks, probably put billy in prime position to hit that 4-16 mark all we sbl-ers strive for.

pick 5
chris mclaughlin, brother of banned for lifers tim and andy, went 5th.  a good pick, yeah, solid.  the most skilled and least annoying of the mclaughlin clan can play, but will he?  rumour has it he's furious with the league for the blacklisting of his whole family.  besides, i doubt anyone would have taken him at all, so ted certainyl pisses away his second selection.

pick 12
: lee nespor, taken i round 3, gives ted another loveable player to hang his "don't hate my team, sbl!" hat on.  besides being THE fan favorite of the sbl, lee can stroke the long ball, as his 2003 homerun derby championship shows.

pick 17
:  one pick alone can mean the difference between a good draft and a bad draft.  ted proved that statement true by taking his sister at pick 17, just so mclelland couldn't take him 6 picks later.   it's not like ted's team was so stacked it could make picks just to dick other teams over.  this was just a bonehead move.   just to give you and idea on how bad this pick was, here are some players that went after ted's sister:  ween farmartino, jason biddle, jen gavala, steve mentrek, phil jones, jon olsavsky and addam stainbrook.

pick 24:  ted's goal was obviously "pick players that everyone loves to balance things out". burger, often there but seldom used, is a prefect pick for ted.  she's cute, she's there if needed, and she won't complain when ted benches her so she can play.

pick 29ian hricik was the best pick of the late draft for ted.  this kid's got game, and at the urging of myself, who felt bad for billy, ted took him here.

pick 36matt macchia, whom i've met only once as he was drunk and passed out in the passenger seat of a car while myself and kip pushed it out of an ice rink-esque driveway on a steep incline, looks like an athlete.  and anyone who would do that passed out making us push thing is pefect for the league.

pick 47
erin leyde was wasted at 47.  she and he crazy homer skills should have gone earlier, but the fact of the matter is she probably won't play for anyone but clayton.  and definately not ted, although billy could possibly convince her to play for him.

post-draftbig glenn silvidi is a wildcard.  if he comes, he's a beast.  and he'll never lose a scrum.

grade: C
all-around, this was a decent draft.  it's a shame ted butchered that pick on his sister and took mclaughlin too soon, because they all but cancel out his selections of weisberg, hricik and lee nespor.  erin leyde should be nice trade bait at some point this season.
