SBL 2005, WEEK 5 JULY 19TH HORSECOCK DOWNS TEAM KOOPA TROOPA 15 TRAIN IN TERRY SHERNISKY 38 (6 INNINGS) ben smith and jeff knight knight combined for 36 runs batted in to lead the tots, who entered the contest in last place in the sbl's american division, to a stunning 23-run, 6 inning bitch-smacking of the league-leading team koopa troopa. the tots came out relatively slow, failing to score at all in the first after surrendering 3 runs to koopa in the top half of the frame. koopa then went up by 10 after putting 7 runs across the plate in the top half of the second stanza, hitting on 7 consecutive shots and putting the former brooklyn bridges in a hole nobody expected them to get out of, especially playing without top draft pick mikey moroco. the navy blue hung weathered the storm, however, and finally got their bats going in the bottom of the second, putting up 8 runs on a very good koopa defense to get back into the mix. during the big second, ben smith connected on a pair of his sbl-record tying 8 homers. koopa once again widened their lead in the first half of inning three. a pat lackey homer drove in 2, and a bryan frankovich single accounted for the other rbi and koopa led 13-8 in the middle of the third. then the real fireworks began. katie kelly led off the tot portion of the inning with a single, and it would be another 32 batters before koopa would record the third out. during their huge run, the biggest single inning in league hitsory, the tots went on hit streaks of 5, 4, and 20 and plated 27 runners. ben smith nailed five homers in the inning, the last one on a tip-in by jeff knight that would have stopped the bleeding at 16 runs. exasperated, koopa would put up only 2 more runs in the final 3 innings. the tots, meanwhile, put up 3 more in the very next frame on smith's 8th jack, giving us the lopsided final score that nobody could have predicted. knight hit on 14 of 19 shots with 2 homers, 18 rbi, an assist and a double play. smith added 15 hits on 19 shots, 8 longballs and 18 ribbies. kelly contributed with 13 hits and a homer. for koopa, pat lackey led the way in matt mcclelland and pat o'mahoney's abscence with a 7 for 11, 2 homer 7 rbi outing. fresh from vacation, bryan frankovich nailed half of his 10 shots for 4 runs batted in. JUKEBOX HERO 21 THE FUPALOOTERS 10 using the low, crooked hoop and undermanned (only greg lackey and jon biddle showed up) team fupa to their advantage, jukebox hero won their first game in 7 tries to improve to 2-7 on the season and knock the fupalooters back under .500 on the year. the all-rookie cast used a gigantic 6th inning to recover from an 8-2 defecit which they had dug themselves into over the first 5 innings. erin hayden, terry hall and mike franovich each collected 3 hits in the board-clearing inning, plating 12 runs to turn their 6-run defecit into a 6-run lead. like koopa a game before, fupa cracked under the duress of having blown a huge game against a lesser team and quickly went down the shitter. they would put only two more runs on the board in the next 3 innings while jukebox would remain hot, scoring 2, 2 and 3 in their final 3 at-bats to make it 2 in a row on the upset chart. fupa got solid outings form both it's regulars. greg lackey went 9 of 14 with 3 homers and 6 rbi as jon biddle drove in 4 and tipped in 7 double plays. what killed them was another butty performance from will williamson, who went 0 for 14 to keep his lifetime batting average at .000. terry hall connected on 9 of his 16 shots with 3 homers and 11 ribbies. erin hayden collected 10 hits, while mike frankovich tallied 2 homers and 8 runs batted in. ANALISA GOODTHING 12 RETURN OF THE WEENISES 13 the two-person team of danielle hennon and terry shernisky proved too much for analisa goodthing, who fell to the weenises by one run for the second straight week. terry shernisky broke a 12-all tie with a run-scoring triple in the bottom of the ninth to win the game for the weenises just as sam lynn had a week before. shernisky had an oppurtunity to win the game on a leadoff solo shot 3 batters earlier, but his shot went in and out. following automatic out williamson, danielle hennon hit the biggest shot of her 3-season career, a 2-out single to keep the inning alive and give the rookie phenom another crack at it. the game went back and forth throughout with 4 lead changes and a handful of ties. analisa used big innings of 5 and 4 runs to stay in the game while return of the weenises scattered their scoring over all but one inning. the difference in the game was the defenses. shernisky alone accounted for 6 double plays while the 3-man team of AGT were only able to put in 3. with williamson putting up his usual horrid numbers, had AGT been able to keep shernisky or hennon to one less at bat, and they would have won the contest. in addition to his 6 put-backs, terry also knocked in 12 on an 8 for 13, 5 homer day. for analisa, who played without billy picciotto for the third straight week, teddy ballgame went 7 for 12 with a homer and 3 ribbies on his home court. olsavsky added 6 runs batted in. THE FUPALOOTERS 9 PJ & THE LADIES 17 sparked by the return of pj nespor to their lineup following a one-week hiatus, the ladies got back on the winning track after spending the last couple of weeks dropping game one of their doubleheaders. nespor rattled home 8 of his 11 shots on a hoop certainly suited to hit arc-less style of play, and tomko benefitted by the return of his leadoff hitter frequently landing on base, nailing 4 homers and knocking in 8. after coming out of the gate for 4 runs after a scoreless fupa first, the ladies never led by less than three and the fupa tandem of biddle and lackey were never really in the contest. by the time rando knight assisted in aryn christman's rbi double to end the scoring, pj&l had dominated the hottest team in the league so thoroughly that jon biddle was seen sobbing like a little bitch. the ladies then used the ninth inning to remove greg lackey's pants. knight added 5 hits and 5 runs batted in to go along with his 3 double plays and assit, while aryn christman contributed with 6 hits. biddle nailed 7 of 13 attempts with a homer, 5 rbi and 6 double plays to pace the fupalooters. in the contest, nate tomko drove in the 500th run of his 5-year career. TRAIN ON TERRY SHERNISKY 34 JUKEBOX HERO 11 (5 innings) the tots continued to make themselves right at home at horsecock downs, putting up 34 runs in their follow-up to the 38 spot the laid on koopa troopa one game earlier. this time, however, the tots didn't allow their opponents into the game at all. ben smith continued to dominate the outside, hitting a 3-run homer to cap a 5-run top of the first. the seldom heard from tot defense limited a very capable and koopa resemblin jukebox squad to one hit in the bottom of the first and the rout was on. it only got uglier in the second as the tots rattled of 13 consecutive hits and put 13 more runs across the dish. smith homers twice more and drove in 5 in the inning while knight drove in 6. koopa finally found some offense in the second, scoring three to prevent a shutout, but the game was over when the former brooklyn bridges lit up the scoreboard for 8 more in the fourth. though matt mcclelland was in the midst of a perfect game for jukebox, his teammates were unwilling to give him a chance at history, and pat lackey (at the urging of pj & the ladies) ensured the game would not get any more unsightly in the 5th as he took the ball and sprinted off the court, only to leave it somewhere in the stanky-ass woods. the referees were forced to call the game. smith hit 12 of 16 shots with 3 homeruns and 14 driven in. jeff knight added 11 hits, 3 homers, 15 rbi, an assist and a double play, and katie kelly got into the action with 13 hits and 5 rbi. for koopa, mcclelland went 6 for 6 with a homer, 4 rbi and a double play. also suiting up for the yellow mesh were erin hayden, teddy ballgame, and for one at-bat, danielle hennon .NEXT |
