PJ & THE LADIES                    20
THE SCREAMIN' SEAGULLS  5  (7 INNINGS)
though they were forced to play without heart and soul dennis lackey, pj & the ladies got a huge boost from the returning jared clayton en route to a big 15-run upset win over american conference rivals the screamin' seagals.
while the ladies fell into an early 2-0 hole after the first third of the contest, they used three huge innings in the middle of the contest to blow the score wide open.  leading off the top of the fourth was a rando knight single, and the ladies wouldn't miss again for seven straight batters when a billy weisberg double would plate to and make the count 6-2.   the seagals would get a run scoring single in the bottom of the stanza to keep the game manageable, but it wouldn't stay that way for long.
assists from both clayton and weisberg would allow the ladies to plate seven more in the very next inning without setting foot behind the triple stripe.  from there, and admidst cries of 'ringer' from the seagulls, it would be all ladies, who would come right back with seve  more in the seventh, inclusing a 2-run, game-ending homer from knight.
weisberg paced the victors with a 9 for 15, 9 rbi, 1 dp, 1 ast, 1 psyche out line,. a lone homer away from becoming only the second sbl player to appear in every stat category in a game.  kinght added 10 hits, 8 ribbies and a pair of double plays.  clayton finished with five hits and three rbi.
lee nespor led the way for the losers, gaining 5 hits in 9 attempts with a pair of rbi.

THE NAPPY HEADED HOS     2
THE SPARKLING WIGGLES  18  (7 INNINGS)
in one of the more highly anticpates games of the week, the sbl's two hottest teams clashed in what very well could have determined who earned a first-round bye in the sbl playoffs.  the nappy headed hos came into the game boasting the sbl's longest win streak at 4, while the sparkly wiggles came in red hot, winning 7 of their last 8 outings.
sadly, for both sbl fans and the hos, the game failed to live up to the hype.
it was all wiggles from the beginning, as the purple and gold played their team credo "win or tie every inning" to perfection.  they held the hos off the board in the first, then came right back with a run scoring base hit from pat lackey in the second.  after again forcing the hos to go 1-2-3 in the second, nate tomko blew the game open in the bottom of the second with a three run homer, capping an inning in which the wiggles would plate 4 more runs to extend their lead to 5.
when the hos finally got an rbi double from matt mcclelland in the top of the fifth, they were already in a 9-0 hole and at very high risk of getting 15-runned out of buttsex ballpark.  the wiggles would keep the pressure right on, and only 2 innings later tomko would jack his third 3-run longball of the afternoon to put the finishing touches on one of the better ace whuppins of the season.
pat lackey carried a perfect game into his final 2 at bats, but sadly missed his last shots.  still, he finished with a 7 for 9, 3 rbi performance.  tomko added a 7 for 9 day with 5 homers, 13 rbi, 6 double plays and 2 psyche outs.  katie kelly would got 5 for 10 with a pair of ribbies.
matt mcclelland led the hos with a 4 for 8, 4 double play performance.

TEAM DOUBLE STUFF  13
JUKEBOX HERO             23
desperately needing a win, team double stuff got just the prescription it was looking for in jukebox hero.  unfortunately, jukebox hero wasn't about to just lie down in this one.
sporting a roster of danielle hennon (3 for 9 in her first game), jamie moroco (1 for 7 her first game), jeanne mentrek (first game ever), gavin st. john (missed 2 straight weeks), jared clayton (2nd game in 3 years), and jon olsavsky (nothing bad to say here), jukebox certainly seemed very, very beatable in this one.  but, as sometimes happens, the planets lined up just right and jukebox somehow, someway managed a very un-jukebox 23 runs to easily toss double stuff into a 5-straight loss abyss.
the game was close in the early stages, as each team was able to counter any offense from the other, and the contest actually stood tied at 9 all entering the fifth frame.  from there, jukebox just went apeshit, dominating in every facet of the  game.  jon olsavsky and jared clayton dominated the game underneath the boards, totalling 3 assists and 5 double plays in the last 5 innings to help the heroes outscore stuff 14-4 from the fifth on.  meanwhile all the yellow mesh bats came to life, and in the eighth they actually rattled off eight consecutive hits, culminating with back to back homers from clayton and olsavsky before a ben elliott double play stopped the bleeding and delivered to us the final score.
olsavsky finished with a 6 for 8 performance with 5 rbi, 2 dp, 2 ast and a psyche out.  clayton added 5 hits, 5 ribbies, a trifecta of double plays and an assist, and gavin st. john collected a game high 8 rbi on 5 of 8 marksmanship, including a 5th inning grand slam.  jamie moroco collected 6 hits and a pair of rbi, and danielle hennon gathered 5 hits from the leadoff slot.
in a losing effort, aryn christman hit on 5 of 9 shots with a homer and 5 rbi.  jamie fabian tipped in three double plays.

HOT FUZZ                                   6
THE SPARKLING WIGGLES  10
two teams headed in opposite directions came into this contest, and both left heading the same way.
the sparkling wiggles got a first-inning grand slam from nate tomko en route to a 5-1 lead, then simply held on as the hot fuzz just couldn't string any hits together, and when they actually did, it was taken away thanks to their own stupidity.
mikey moroco put together an impressive three-dumb thing game, but perhaps his most promising shoot-youself-in-foot moment came when he actually psyched out his own teammate moments after having a triple erased for being out of uniform.  given the recent good fortunes of the wiggles (who now have won 8 of 9 and sit at 10-6 on the year), it seemed unlikely hot fuzz would be able to get the job done without playing well.  and they played far from well in this one.
over the course of the game, hot fuzz would score only six, but strand 12 runners on base.  conversely, the wiggles would leave only six on base, and never really be challenged in this one in spite of thier relatively low offensive output.
katie kelly led things for the wiggles with a 7 hit, 2 rbi outing.  tomko finished with 6 hits in 8 at bats, 2 of which were homeruns, for seven rbi, 5 double plays and a psyche out.  pat lackey hit on half of his 8 shots with an rbi, and jeremy battyani wants everyone to know he went 1 for 1 off the bench.
pat nespor paced the losers with 7 hits in 10 at bats with a pair of rbi.  bryan frankovich failed to drive in a run for the first time all seasons- i.e., he choked, but did manage 4 double plays.

THE SCREAMIN' SEAGULLS           18
KATHLEEN TURNER OVERDRIVE  19
in what would have been a huge win for the seagulls and a devestating loss for kathleen turner, cream really rose to the top in this one as what, on paper anyway, was the best team plated 9 runs in the final inning to pull out the duke.
the seagulls controlled the game the entire way, never trailing until the final at-bat.  though they didn't hit particularly well, they made every shot count, leaving only one runner on base all game, which has got to be some sort of record or something.  meanwhile, their defense was solid, keeping one of the better offenses in the game, and more importantly, one of the best players in the game, totally in check for almost long enough to win.  almost.
terry hall had an unbeliveable game for the winners.  while he hit on only 6 of 14 shots, all were homers.  he totalled 14 rbi, including 4 on a 7th inning grand slam that extended the seagull lead to 16-6 and looked to put the game away.
but the overdrive was not to be denied in the final 2 innings.  terry shernisky hit a 2-out grand slam of his own in the eighth to make the game a little more manageabel, cutting the seagull lead to 18-10.  then, after keeping the brown and tan off the board in the top of the final inning, greg lackey led off the bottom of the ninth with a single to get the ball rolling.  two batters later, a shernisky longball cut the defecit to 5, then in shernisky's next at-bat, a base clearing double made the count 17-18 in favor of the seagulls with no outs.
then things got really interesting.  tony mastrian and glackey missed back to back shots to give kto a pair of outs and put the seagulls within one miss of holding on.  kto captain kip corbett calmly stepped to the plate, staring a 4 for 10 day in the face, and clanked home a left triple, setting the table for the red-hot sherniksy to end the game with a 2-run homer, which of course he did.
shernisky hit on 8 of 11 shots with 4 homeruns and 12 rbi, plus 5 double plays for the winners.  olsavsky hit on 8 of 12 and tipped in 3 double plays for the losers.
