PJ & THE LADIES II- 12 PURPLE UNDEPENDABLES- 9 behind the clutch outside shooting of steve mentrek, the 2002 version of pj & the ladies escaped horsecock downs with a huge win over the purple undependables, a dangerous team from the inaguaral season. while fortune smiled on mentrek and the ladies, the undependables got less from the basketball gods as 2001 mvp finalist jeff meyers and terry wareham both missed on 3-run homer attempts in the bottom of the ninth that would have forced extra innings. following the game, mentrek had these words for the losing squad: "hey guys, wanna get high?" the game began with a memorable scrum pitting the package against the wareham brothers. while josh, the gayer of the brothers, spent much of the time dancing around like a little girl, hammy took all of the punishment the package could dish out, and once nespor and lepak had tuckered out their loin muscles, found it in himself to carry himself across the finish line with the ball to earn his team home-field advantage. the ladies were unable to score in their first at-bat, but the undependables got a lone score in the bottom of the frame when meyers drove himself in with a double. the defenses continued to dominate the early stages of the game as meyers and terry wareham tapped in double plays in the second and third, respectively to keep the ladies off the board. on the other side, mentrek and nespor got the tip-ins. finally, in the fourth inning, the ladies came alive. sparked by an appearance off the bench by katie burger (who didn' t get a hit or anything like that, but hey...she's fucking sweet) the ladies got back-to-back triples by lepak and knight and a 2-run homer from mentrek before a meyers double play stifled the rally. trailing 3-1, the undependables got one back thanks to hammy's 2-out solo jack to keep the game close heading into the fifth. the ladies offense stayed hot as the game headed to it's second half, with mentrek hitting another solo shot to regain the ladies a 2-run lead, followed by a burger triple and back to back doubles by lepak and knight to make the count 6-1. the younger wareham and tino sotopacheco finally got themselves into the game in the sixth, connecting on their first hits in the form of back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. meyers stroked a triple to bring both runners homer, and hammy's triple attempt was tipped back in for an assist by the modell-turned-baseketball-player. lepak coerced a miss from hamlett, and then double played sotopacheco to end the inning and keep his team in front 6-4. following a 1-2-3- inning from the ladies, the undependables took their first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth when jeff meyers swished through a grand slam with 2 gone. captain pj nespor put himself back into the game, and almost immediatley the ladies regain their lead as nespor led off the inning with a triple from the left side. knight followed with a triple of his own, and mentrek banked home his 3rd homer of the contest to give his squad a 9-8 advantage. the defensive tandem of knight and mentrek would not let another double play oppurtunity slip away as each tipped one home in the next 2 innings, preventing the undependables from scoring until the ninth. the purple defense, meanwhile, was just as stingy, not allowing the ladies a single hit in the seventh or eighth innings. when the ninth arrived, the ladies got to work builing on their lead, and did just so thanks extra base hits from lepak and knight and steve mentrek's 4th homer of the day, this time of the 2-run variety. by the time hammy's double play of a nespor miss ended the half-inning for the ladies, the undependables were facing a grand-slam defecit. meyers led off the stanza with a single, but a hammy airball followed. hamlett doubled to put 2 in scoring position and gary swogger, coming in for sotopacheco, uglied in a single to drive home meyers, but that would be all the undependables would get as meyers and hammy's homer attempts would both go in-and-out. mentrek's 4 homer, 2 double play, 7 rbi line paced the ladies, who also got 4 hits from knight and lepak. lepak was also credited with 2 psyche-outs and a double play. meyers had 2 assists, 4 double plays and drove home 5 in a losing effort. terry wareham connected on 5 hits and drove in 3.
