THE 2009 JIM VARNEY TROPHY FINALISTS:  SBL PLAYER OF THE YEAR

Terry Shernisty, Opie and the E Street Band
16GP, .530avg, 88HR, 164rbi, 0ass, 43dp, 0psyche, 7dumb things
Shernisky blew away the home run record and 164 rbi's is pretty damn good. It's hard to argue with his stat line, but Terry's downfall could be that he abandoned his team twice half way through the week. His .530 average is also indicative of the fact that he shot almost nothing but homers. With 88 homers, you could reasonably expect to have at least 200 rbi's, but more than half were solo shots.

Nate Tomko, Queenie Mentrek
20gp, .628av, 45hr, 150rbi, 13ass, 64dp, 6psyche, 3 dumb things
Nate had one of the lowest averages in the league after the first couple weeks, and even battling injuries all season long managed to put up one hell of a stat line. He trailed only Ben Smith and Mac in average, finished 3rd in homers, 2nd in rbi's and tops in assists and double plays. His recent hot play has driven Queenie Mentrek to be the hottest team down the stretch and the team nobody wants to play in the playoffs.

PJ O'Conner, Honest Abe's Truth Brigade
22gp, .475avg, 56hr, 137rbi, 4ass, 59dp, 0psyche, 6dumb things
PJ's stat line is good enough to be in the player of the year discussion but his carefree attitude and desire to screw over his captain bring him down a bit. His stats could be so much better if he hadn't shot left handed for the 1st 3 weeks of the season. If the voting took place after the playoffs, I could see his chances increasing. If the Truth Brigade makes a run in the playoffs, it will most likely be because PJ gets serious and shows us what he can do when he wants to win.

Billy Weisberg, PJ & the Ladies
20gp, .453avg, 15hr, 97rbi, 5ass, 29dp, 0psyche, 4dumb things
Billy was an early frontrunner for the Earnest but that was while Tomko was having his slow start. His stats have faded a bit, but it's hard to argue that he's the main reason the ladies got the all important bye to the finals.

THE 2009 ROOKIE OF THE YEAR FINALISTS:  THE MARK TARKANICK TROPHY

chris errett,
honest abe's truth brigade
19 GP, 23 HR, .395 AVG, 52 RBI, 1 AST, 31 DP, 0 PSYCHE, 11 DUMB
chris errett was penciled in by just about everyone as rookie of the year before the season began.  he has mostly lived up to the hype and has shown some promise.  being benched by will williamson in week 8 and then no-showing in week 9 may hurt his chances with some voters, but overall, he has been the most reliable rookie and has the best numbers.

adam good, pj & the ladies
13 GP, 7 HR, .391 AVG., 24 RBI, 0 AST, 3 DP, 0 PSYCHE, 3 DUMB
he's the only other rookie worth mentioning.  he doesn't have the best numbers, but he was a valuable role player for pj & the ladies.  a higher average or double play numbers would have helped his cause.  playing in six less games doesn't help either.  however, he may steal a vote or two simply because he was on the team in first place.

THE CHICKEN LEG TROPHY:  SBL MOST IMPROVED PLAYER

one of two former laser cats on this list...he was talked about as a poty finalist earlier in the yaer

2008:  24 GP, 12 HR, .335 AVG, 53 RBI, 2 AST, 35 DP, 1 PSYCHE, 10 DUMB

bill deforest,
honest abe's truth brigade
more than tripled his homers, doubled his double plays and drove in 29 more runs...should also be an all-star
2008:  23 GP, 11 HR, .400 AVG, 53 RBI, 0 AST, 9 DP, 0 PSYCHE, 6 DUMB
2009:  23 GP, 35 HR, .412 AVG, 84 RBI, 0 AST, 18 DP, 0 PSYCHE, 17 DUMB

ben smith, queenie mentrek
written off by many in the preseason but came on strong in july and led the league in batting...arguably the best season of his six year career
2008:  10 GP, 2 HR, .553 AVG, 33 RBI, 2 AST, 16 DP, 0 PSYCHE, 2 DUMB
2009:  21 GP, 7 HR, .710 AVG, 95 RBI, 7 AST, 17 DP, 2 PSYCHE, 3 DUMB
