SBL 2005 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP AUGUST 14 ASS CLOWN OUTDOOR ARENA, SHARON PA 1ST SEED) PJ & THE LADIES VERSUS 6TH SEED) TRAIN ON TERRY SHERNISKY TRAIN ON TERRY SHERNISKY 5 PJ & THE LADIES 20 (7 INNINGS) jon olsavsky's solo blast to lead off the bottom of the seventh gave pj & the ladies the 15 runs they needed for the mercy rule to kick in and brought the sbl's 5-season dynasty one step closer to their destiny. while many thought it would be the tots dynamic offense taking control early, the ladies came out of the gates hungry, looking well rested after their 3-week hiatus. after holding the tots scoreless after one, pj&l put 9 runs on the board in the bottom half of the inning, more than dealing with the wet conditions at ass clown outdoor arena. the scoring frenzy was capped by a tomko 2-run blast, and featured a pair of rbi triples by 2-time sbl champ jon olsavsky. shellshocked, the tots were never able to get their offense in gear. they failed to score again in the second, in spite of their first two runners reaching base. pj & the maidens continued to pour runs on in their next at-bat, as tomko, rando knight and olsavsky hit on consecutive 2-out at-bats to plate 2 more runs. after 2 full innings of work, the ladies had cut themselves an 11-0 lead with the tot offense showing no signs of life. another hitless inning followed for ben smith's troops, but this time the tot defense was able to keep the ladies from building on their lead, and the score reamined unchanged thru 3. then, with 2 gone in the top of the fourth, train on ted's sister finally drew some blood as smith knocked himself in to get on the board. once again, however, the ladies would answer, tallying one of their own on tomko's triple. the scoring ceased until the top of the sixth, when the tot offense finally did what it had been used to doing all season- scoring runs in bunches. mike moroco led the inning off with a double, smith a dn katie kelly followed with hits of their own, and suddenly the ladies big lead seemed reachable. following a moroco miss, smith would drill a 3-run homer, and by the time the end of the tot at-bat rolled around, the ladies held an 11-5 cushion. unfortunately for the blue and green, the ladies were not to be caught, as a jon olsavsky assist highlighted another huge inning for the hammer and sickle as the home team put another 8 runs across the plate. in the inning, the ladies drained 8 consecutive hits, culminating with another tomko blast, to all but seal the win, which would come one inning later on olsavsky's homer. for the winners, olsavsky hit 8 of 11 shots with 7 rbi, and assist and a psyche out from the leadoff position. tomko hit on 7 of 10 attempts with 3 homers and 7 rbi, a assist and 4 double plays. rando knight turned in a 6 for 10 game with 2 runs batted in. TRAIN ON TERRY SHERNISKY 21 PJ & THE LADIES 18 by holding on thru a furious lady rally, the tots were able to make their 9-run first inning hold up as they leveled the sbl championship series at one game apiece. after bowing big in the first game, the former suede denim secret police (gay name) came out of the blocks with 10 hit in a row, including a pat nespor triple attempt that was put back in by ben smith, to knock the ladies from the pedestal they were perched upon after their game one domination. in the inning, each tot recorded 2 rbi. the ladies refused to give in, however, and scored 2 in the bottom of the first to show they weren't going to roll over. then, after a weisberg double play helped hold the tots hitless in the second, the ladies got a 2-run homer from nate tomko and an rbi single from rando knight to cut the lead to 9-5. for the next few innings, the ladies defense dominated, limiting the tots to a single hit while recording a double play in every inning, a trend that would continue all game long. the score remained unchanged, though, as the ladies offense went limp for a brief time. both offenses finally came back around in the fifth. the tots looked to put the game away with a big 7-run inning, but the ladies bounced back with an 8-run frame of their own. in the 15-run stanza, tomko and smith exchanged 3-run homers, while both mike moroco and rando knight recorded 3 rbi. still trailing, but now by only a 16-13 count, the ladies once again found themselves unable to catch a team that wasn't scoring runs. the tots failed to get a hit in the sixth or seventh, but the ladies couldn't advance a runner past second to chip away at the lead. a tomko double play led off the tot half of the eighth and looked like it was going to keep the score unchanged, but the tots were able to summon 5 consecutive hits following the d.p., including back to back to back doubles by smith, nespor and kelly. when the dust settled on the top of the eighth, the score stood at 19-13. as they had all series, the ladies had an answer. tomko led off the bottom of the inning with a triple, then knocked in a 3-run homer in his next at-bat. in between, weisberg, knight and olsavsky connected on base hits, and the tot lead had been cut to a scant one run heading into the ninth. with the game- and the season- on the line, the tots willed in 2 more 2-out runs, this time via a 2-ribbie double by smith after once again seeing their leadoff man get double played. with the lady offense seemingly back on track, the tots headed to the bottom of the inning clinging to a 21-18 lead. fortunately for fans of the tots or 3-game series', the weisberg, knight and nespor missed on consecutive single attempts, and ben smith and co. were able to force a deciding game 3. for the winners, katie kelly posted a 10 for 13 outing with 5 rbi. both smith and moroco hit on 8 of 13 attempts, with the former driving in 6. pat nespor finished with a 6 of 12, 5 rbi line. in a losing effort, tomko hit 7 of 12 shots with 3 homers, 9 rbi, 6 double plays and an assist. weisberg and knight added 7 hits each. |
TRAIN ON TERRY SHERNISKY 21 PJ & THE LADIES 31 after 5 long years, and countless losses, screwjobs and heartbreaks, pj & the ladies finally have their world championship. and it can all be credited to DVDA and the baseketball radio song. allow me to explain: the tots jumped out to a 10-1 lead after the first inning. after scoring 3 more in the top of the second, the ladies looked doomed. suddenly, one of the ladies -and like the battle of lexington, nobody knows for sure who fired the first shot- cried out "fuck!" naturally, the only thing one can do when "fuck!" is cried, is recite the lyrics "you're life is spinning out of control..." and that's exactly what pj&l did, breaking into the most memorable song from the movie from which the sbl was derived. and something happened as the ladies began singing... they began.... playing....better! like the grinch's heart growing 3 sizes as the whos sang in the town square, the ladies skillz grew threefold as the baseketball radio song filled the air at ass clown arena. "seems the whole world is out to get you...."- tomko triples! "everything is wrong..."- 2-rbi double by olsavsky! "nothing seems right-ah"- bases loaded triple from weisberg! "there's a sinking feeling inside-ah, and your best friend just turned his back..."-tomko puts back a knight miss for a 2-run double! and by the time the song ended with trey arriving in calcutta, the ladies had gone off to the tune (get it?) of 14 runs over the span on 2 innings while cooling off a red-hot tot team enough to hold them hitless. sure, train on ted's sister still held a slim 16-15 advantage, but the game was over. the ladies were now in the zone. and they quickly took the lead in their next at-bat, plating 6 more runs. then, for good measure, they did their rendition of another DVDA classic, the theme from orgazmo, and scored seven more times in the bottom of the fifth to make the count 28-17. from there, pj&l put it on cruise control, coasting into the bottom of the ninth, tacking on runs all the while. when katie kelly missed a single to put the final nail in the coffin, the ladies erputed into celebration, mobbing each other at mid-court amidst a shower of frosty, carbonated goodness. tears of joy streamed down the faces of weisberg, knight, and nespor, all of whom hoisted the lisa "left-eye" lopez trophy for the first time in their illustrious 5-year careers. when rando knight, who has been with the franchise since day one, was asked to comment, he had the following ot say: *grab balls* "woooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!" in a chamionship-winning effort, jon olsavsky hit 11 of his 16 shots and drove in 7 runs. billy weisberg connected in 11 of 15 at-bats with 10 rbi, and rando knight hit safely 9 of 13 times. nate tomko contributed his 9 for 16, 4 homer, 10 rbi, 4 double play, 1 assist, 1 psyche out line, and pj nespor came off the bench to go 3 for 4. for the losers, kelly hit 12 of 14 shots with 7 rbi. smith drove in 11 on 8 of 13 marksmanship. congratulations to all of the ladies, but especially weisberg, nespor and knight, a trio of the sbl's true greats who have more than earned this one. GAME OF THE SERIES: GAME 2, it was the only close one. besides, it gave us game 3. FINALS MOST VALUABLE PLAYER: NATE TOMKO, PJ&L (24 for 38, 9 homers, 27 rbi, 3 assist, 13 double plays and 2 psyche outs, all team highs) playoffs 2005 |
