SBL 2004 PLAYOFFS SUNDAY, AUG 1 THE K-Y COURT AT ASSBANG FIELDHOUSE 5 SEED) THE SHORT BUS ALL-STARS (8-12) VS. 6 SEED) PJ & THE LADIES (7-13) (short bus won season series 2-1) PJ & THE LADIES 14 THE SHORT BUS ALL-STARS 10 aided by the return of kevin "stud" frankovich to the sbl, ted gillilands untimely homer shooting, and a huge 6th inning, pj & the ladies were able to pull off the mild upset and take a one game lead in the best of three playoff series. frankovich, playing in one his fourth game of the year, was given a presidential padron, allowing him to play in the postseason. to counter the addition of stud to the ladies, chris maclaughlin was also padroned for short bus. the game kicked off with a 3-on-3 scrum in which big rando knight headlocked both lee nespor and chris mclughlin, taking them both out of the competition. however, that left only greg lackey and lenny crist to cover billy weisberg, who scooped up the ball and easily split the defense to cross the finish line. the all-stars took home team. a mclaughlin double play ended the ladies first before it even got started, and the all-stars capitalized with a run of their own when ted gilliland brought home weisberg with a double. despite getting leadoff runners on in each of the next two innings, the all-stars failed to score, and the ladies gained the lead after three thanks to run-scoring triples from stud and crist. short bus crossed the dish four times in the fourth thanks to back to back homers by mclaughlin and nespor, momentarily regaining the lead which they would hold until the big ladies 6th. playing small ball, the seasoned veteran ladies moved around runners and collected 4 runs before stud frankovich's two-run jack blew the game wide open. trailing 14-6 heading into the bottom of the ninth, short bus made one final charge, bud teddy ballgame's 3-run homer miss all but eliminated any chance of a comeback and the ladies, following a mclaughlin homer, put the all-stars in a hole one batter later. for the victorious ladies, stud nailed 3 homers and drove in7 on 6 of 10 marksmanship with 2 double plays. knight hit half of his 10 shots and drove in 5. the all-stars were led by mclaughlin's 5 for 10, 3 homer, 6 rbi, 2 double play line. PJ & THE LADIES 16 THE SHORT BUS ALL-STARS 8 by getting production from every member of their lineup, the ladies were able to eliminate teddy ballgames charges from the postseason, and did so without breaking a sweat. the ladies leapt out of the gate swinging, scoring 4 in the top of the first thanks to a stud frankovich 2-run jack, and never looked back. a 5-run seventh got the all-stars back into the game for a few short moments, but the ladies made the bottom of the ninth a formality with 4 runs in the top half of the inning, extending their lead to 16-7. pj & the ladies scrored in every inning but the second as greg lackey and rando knight kicked in 7 of 11 shots while stud and crist bagged 5 hits apiece. every member of the ladies contributed 4 rbi, and all but crist tipped in a double play. knight added an assist to the winning effort. for the short bus all-stars, chris mclaughlin did his best to keep his squad in the game with a 6 for 8 outing with 2 homers, 6 runs batted in, an assist and 5 double plays. unlike the ladies balanced assault, nobody else in the lineup contributed much of anything. for the second straight year, teddy ballgames troops have been swept out of the playoffs in the first round. the ladies sweep is the first in their nipple-hardening, jean-creaming history.
