SBL 2007 WEEK 5 JUNE 17 THE K-Y COURT AT ASSBANG FIELDHOUSE HOT FUZZ 30 PJ & THE LADIES 31 needing 6 runs to come from behind and win, pj & the ladies rattled off seven consecutive hits without a miss, including a dennis lackey traditional grand slam and ending with a lackey double to plate billy weisberg, in order to beat previously undefeated hot fuzz and kick off sbl week five in style. the high-scoring game was back and forth all day. a big 6-run first for hot fuzz was immediately countered by a 5-run outburst from the ladies. the ladies defense then held fuzz to one run in the second, only to put up five more of their own for the early lead. the game changed hands 4 more times during the fray, and not one single inning went scoreless as the two teams combined for over 60 runs, only the fourth time in sbl history that feat has been accomplished. after blowing their early lead, all hope seemed lost for the ladies as they failed to score in either the 6th or 7th, then got only one in the eighth. the fuzz, meanwhile, was pouring it on, and by the time the bottom of the ninth rolled around, the orange thunder of bryan frankovich had a commanding 30-25 lead against an offense that was suddenly sputtering. that's when the ladies did something they had only done once before. went bananas offensively. back to back to back singles by dennis lackey, rando knight and billy weisberg gave lackey the oppurtunity to pull within one with a single shot, which is exactly what he did, swishing through a homer for his second grand slam of the game. after that, it took only three straight from the double line to knock frank and company from the ranks of the unbeaten. lackey finished with 11 hits in 19 attempts with 4 homers and 17 rbi. in addition, lackey tipped in 2 double plays and coerced a pair of psyche outs. weisberg went 15 of 19 from the field with 9 ribbies, an assist and a double play, while big rando hit on 11 of 19. bryan frankovich hit 10 of his 15 shots with 5 homeruns to drive in 18, one off the ebl record. frank also tipped in 3 double plays. also for the losers, mike frankovich hit 10 of 15 for 6 rbi, while pat nespor and gavin st. john posted identical 8 for 15, 3 rbi lines. JUKEBOX HERO 10 KATHLEEN TURNER OVERDRIVE 25 (8 innings) terry shernisky and greg lackey were just too much for the jukebox heroes to overcome in this one, combining for 24 hits and 19 rbi to blow out jukebox in 8 innings. the fairly well-stacked jukebox squad featuring a trio of former all-stars in rando knight, pat lackey and mike frankovich as well as captain lenny crist just couldn't seem to get their offense going for this one, at least after the first shot went up. pat lackey led off the game by drilling a grand slam, and it seemed, at least for one fleeting moment, that perhaps the pj&l upset was about to rub off on jukebox. it was not to be. after the slam went through, the yellow mesh offenses went cold. kathleen turner overdrive, meanwhile, was having no trouble finding the bottom of the basket, scoring nine in the fourth to snatch the lead, then simply pouring it on til the referees put a halt to the action a bit prematurely. greg lackey hit 12 of 18 from the leadoff spot with seven ribbies and a pair of double plays. shernisky finished with 12 hits, 4 of which were homers, and 12 rbi. sherry also tipped in an assist and a trio of double plays. kip corbett shook off his disgusting previous week with a seven hit, 6 rbi performance. lackey tipped in 3 double plays for the losers. JUKEBOX HERO 2 THE SPARKLING WIGGLES 27 (6 innings) in one of the most lopsided games in league annals, the sparkling wiggles hot/cold offense finally seemed to click against a jukebox hero team that, on paper at least, was way better than the final score would indicate. though the wiggles were potent on offense, this game could have been a little closer had the defensive trifecta of pat nespor, lenny crist, and lee nespor remembered to play defense beyond the psyche-out. nate tomko torched the heroes inside with 4 assists, as well as a number of self-assisted put-backs, and even pat lackey got into the assist column in this one. katie kelly drilled 12 of 15 shots with a homer and 11 rbi. nate tomko finished with 11 hits in 14 attempts with 2 homers and 11 rbi, as well as 4 double plays. plackey drove in 5 on 9 of 14 marksmanship. jamie moroco hit a pair of solo homers for the only two hero runs, though it should be noted that her second one was swatted away by tomko. aside from moroco, the heroes managed only a second inning-single from pat nespor. ugh. the wigglesput up seven in each of the first two innings, then 10 in the third to clear the board in each of the first 3 stanzas before calling off the dogs. they outhit jukebox 28-3. NAPPY HEADED HOS 9 SCREAMIN' SEAGALS 10 playing with only 2 players, the nappy headed hos led in this one for most of the game, only to succumb to the superior firepower of the seagals in the last two innings. with ben smith working at the u.s. open, ray cataline fishin' with the pops, and stud frankovich being wherever he be on sundays, jamie moroco and matt mcclelland had to accept an out overy third at-bat but still managed to make a hell of a game out of this one. moroco hit 9 of 13 shots with a pair of rbi, and matt mcclelland hit on 5 of 13 with 7 rbi, an assist and a trifecta of double plays. the seagals spent most of the early part of the game napping, and only managed 2 hits over the first 4 innings. though they did manage 2 runs in the fith, it was the eighth that finally got the brown and tan going. after a leadoff miss from lenny crist, the seagals rattled off 6 consecutive hits, culminating with a terry hall 3-run homer to pull the gamer to 9-8 in favor of the hos. then, after holding the hos hitless to lead off the final frame, terry hall, lee nespor and jon olsavsky went back to back to back from the double line to get the two runs they needed to tie and win the contest, giving themselves a much needed win over a solid, if understaffed, nhh squad. olsavsky hit 5 of his 10 shots and drove in 3 rbi. terry hall hit on five of 9 shots with a homerun and four rbi, as well as 2 double plays.. PJ & THE LADIES 19 THE SPARKLING WIGGLES 26 behind a record-tying 19 runs batted in from nate tomko, the sparkling wiggles broke a tie atop the american conference with pj&l and got back to a .500 mark on the campaign with an impressive win. both offenses started fairly slowly, with neither team scoring in each of the first two innings. in the third, katie kelly broke the tie and opened the floodgates by driving in pat lackey with a 2-out double. from there, both offenses went apeshit, scoring in every inning from that point on. with lackey and kelly setting the plate for him from in close, tomko hit six 3-run homers over the next five innings, and finished one rbi short of becoming the first sbl'er to drive in 20 runs in a regular season game. he finished with 12 hits in 18 attempts (including 12 of his final 13) and tipped in 8 double plays. pat lackey hit 12 of his 17 shots with 4 ribbies, and katie kelly hit 11 shots and plated three. not to be outdone, the ladies continued the spectacular play they've shown over the last two weeks. billy weisberg hit 11 of 16 shots for 5 rbi. dennis lackey hit only 6 of his 15 shots, but made them count with 3 homers and 11 rbi, as well as a psyche out and a double play. big rando knight hit 9 shots, drov in 3, and got a pair of psyche-outs. with the win, the wiggles moved to 5-5 on the year, including 3-0 against the ladies and 5-0 in the american conference. |
TEAM DOUBLE STUFF 10 KATHLEEN TURNER OVERDRIVE 25 (7 innings) for the second time in one day kathleen turner overdrive made quick work of their opposition, ending this one in 7 innings thanks to the 15-run rule, again by a 25-10 count. a trade between the sparkling wiggles and double stuff sent danielle hennon to TDS for the week, allowing aryn christman and jamie fabian to avoid having to settle on automatic out will williamson as their third player. it didn't do much good. though the game started in favor of double stuff (they held an 8-7 lead heading into the fourth) it quickly deteriorated, as over the final four frames they got outscored 18-2. terry shernisky continued his absurd play of late, this time going 13 for 15 with 5 homers and 14 rbi, as well as 3 double plays. greg lackey, as always, was the right in kto's left-right combination, going 9 of 15 with 6 ribbies. kip corbett drove in the final five runs, and actually tipped in a shernisky homerun for the final 2 runs of the contest. jamie fabian hit on 7 of his 11 at-bats and drove in 4 in a losing effort. THE SCREAMIN' SEAGALS 10 TEAM DOUBLE STUFF 15 double stuff rebounded nicely from their 15-run loss to KTO one game prior, taking out their frustrations on the screamin' seagals who had just squeaked out a big win over the nappy headed hos. led once again by captain aryn christman, who turned in an 8-hit, 10 rbi perfomance, double stuff improved their record to 5-5 on the season. all of the action came early in this one, as both teams came out swinging. after the fourth inning, the score stood at 12-8 in favor of double stuff. from that point on, both offenses went into hibernation, with the only otheroffensive outburst coming from the double stuff 8th, when 5 straight hits plated three more before a terry hall double play stranded 2 runners on base and kep the seagals within striking distance. it was not to be, however, as hall stepped on the line while attempting a grand slam in the bottom of the ninth to end the contest. and the part that really sucked? he actually made the shot. both danielle hennon and jamie fabian posted 7 for 11 lines, with fabian driving in 4 and tippin in 3 double plays. in a losing effort, olsavsky hit 8 of his 11 shots with a homer, 4 ribbies and an assist. hall finished with 2 homeruns, 4 rbi, and 3 double plays. HOT FUZZ 9 THE NAPPY HEADED HOS 10 though they lost the sbl's first-ever dodgeball scrum to determine who won the right to be home team, hot fizz did rebound from their first loss of the season with another win over the nappy headed hos, whom they've beaten 3 times on the year. both mike moroco and bryan frankovich has big games for the victors. moroco, fresh from his graduation party, hit on 7 of 12 attempts with a pair of longballs, one of which was an eighth inning grand slam, and 7 rbi as well as 2 double plays. frankovich also had seven hits, with 6 rbi and three double plays. the nappy headed hos added jeff pallini to their roster for this one, avoiding the will williamson rule. and while pallini did play well in his first game of the season (5 for 13), it wasn't enough to overcome a hot fuzz squad on a mission to avenge themselves. matt mcclelland hit 8 of 13 shots with a quartet of rbi and 2 double plays in a losing effort. the nhh now stand at 5-5 on the year. PLAYER OF THE WEEK: nate tomko, wiggles (23 of 32, 30 rbi, 8 homers, 4 assists, 12 double plays) terry shernisky, kto (25 of 32, 26 rbi, 9 homeruns, 1 assist, 6 double plays) dennis lackey, pj&l (3 grand slams) TEAM OF THE WEEK: the sparkling wiggles (2-0, and beat the team that beat the team) GAME OF THE WEEK: pj&l- 31, hot fuzz-30 (duh) SCHED2007 |
