SBL 2007, WEEK 10 JULY 22 HOFFA CENTRE PJ & THE LADIES 23 TEAM DOUBLE STUFF 14 with the win over their interconference rivals, pj & the ladies pulled evern with double stuff at 8-11 on the season and ensured that the two squads would meet again in a first-round playoff series next weekend. the contest featured two of the league's biggest late-season additions in the ladies jared clayton and stuff's george kovac. the two certainly didn't dissapoint, as each led their team in runs batted in, though it would be hall of famer clayton's team that played a full nine innings to emerge victorrious. the two teams slugged it out over the first four innings, seemingly trying to one-up each other with every hit. at the end of the fourth inning, the score stood at 14-12 in favor of double stuff. but from that point on, it was all ladies, as they would hold stuff to a mere five hits in the final five innings while continuing to pour on the offense. the ladies, for what has got to be the first time in their storied history, plated at least one run in all nine innings. clayton finished with 9 hits and 9 rbi in 14 attempts with 2 homers, 2 assists and 5 double plays. dennis lackey chipped in with a pair of homers and nine ribbies of his own. rando knight collected 8 hits from the leadoff poisiton. in a losing effort, kovac went 6 for 11 and drove in 6. aryn christman hit on 9 of 12 shots with 4 rbi, and jon biddle hit safely 8 times in 12 attempts. biddle also converted a quartet of double plays. HOT FUZZ 23 THE SPARKLING WIGGLES 14 with the sbl regular season title on the line, hot fuzz came ready to play, and by virtue of their big win over the wiggles now sit safely in the sbl finals. after a back and forth game which had the wiggles up by one after the sixth stanza, hot fuzz caught fire. from the seventh inning on, fuzz would fail to connect on only 6 of 22 shots to easily outdistance their purple rivals, who struggled to consistently find the bottom of the hoop. bryan frankovich once again paced his team, all but locking up the world's all-star captains spot with a 14 for 18, 2 homer, 12 rbi, 7 double play performance. mike frankovich added 11 hits and 6 rbi, and pat nespor connected on 9 of 18 shots with 5 ribbies. the losing wiggles, who fell to 11-8, got an 8 for 11, 4 rbi day from katie kelly. nate tomko hit on 7 of 11 shots with 3 homers, 10 rbi and 6 double plays. KATHLEEN TURNER OVERDRIVE 7 THE NAPPY HEADED HOS 9 with neither team failing to produce more than two players for this one, it was jamie moroco's addiion of the ladies john davidson that made all the difference. having only two members of his squad in attendance, kto captain kip corbett was forced to put in the dreaded will williamson by trading Z.J.'s to big rando for davidson, moroco helped her team avoid the automatic out every third batter, and it was just enough to keep her team on top. though they certainly played plenty shitty enough to lose this one. terry shernisky put up another homer-laden monster effort, hitting 4 homers and driving in 6, with a trio of double plays in a losing effort. moroco hit 7 of 12 shots with an assist (you read it right) and 3 runs batted in for the winners. ben smith hit 5 of 12 with a homer and 5 rbi. the win kepy the hos in the running for a first-round bye, as they sit in a three-way tie with KTO and the wiggkes. JUKEBOX HERO 14 KATHLEEN TURNER OVERDRIVE 15 (11 INNINGS) after dominating the scrum to determine home team, terry hall of jukebox hero made the questionable call to toss the ball to kto's terry shernisky as he crossed the finish line, earning the overdrive the right to bat last and ultimately coming back to bite the yellow mesh in the ass. playing again without a third teammate, kto's shernisky just went apeshit. this time, the player of the year finalist dropped in 8 of 15 shots with 7 homers and 14 rbi, including the game winning triple with two gone in the bottom of the 11th. sherry also tipped in 5 double plays. kip corbett aided his squads cause with a 9 for 15 day. the jukebox squad which, on paper, probably should have dominated, proved once again that jukebox is just way, way worse than the sum of its parts. danielle hennon of the sparkling wiggles hit on 7 of 12 shots with 3 rbi's from the leadoff hole. hall added 2 homers and 6 rbi, as well as a pair of double plays. also suiting up in the mesh were ben elliott, bob spohn and jared clayton. THE NAPPY HEADED HOS 4 PJ & THE LADIES 6 with the recently acquired john davidson missing in action, the hos once again dove into the talent pool, this time pulling the lovely jordana beh from its murky depths to avoid having to place will williamson into their lineup. the move proved huge, as beh's 7 for 12 outing led her team, but also proved kinda futile as the hos managed only 4 runs in what was a very winnable game that would have earned them a first-round bye. jared clayton went 7 for 12 with 3 rbi and 4 double plays for the victors. i'm not gonna say much more about this game, because frankly, neither team gave me much to talk about. THE SPARKLING WIGGLES 18 JUKEBOX HERO 13 after beating the wiggles in a scrum for the first time in 8 weeks, jukebox seemed to have the purple and gold on their heels. however a dominating inside performance by the american conference champs proved to be the difference in this one, helping the wiggles overcome a huge homerfest from jukebox's jordana beh. the wiggles got 6 total assists in this one, tying the sbl's single-game record set by pj & the ladies in 2005. nate tomko tipped in 4 while pat lackey and katie kelly each got one. jukebox, who featured the stylings of both mike and jamie moroco, lee nespor, and danielle hennon and jeremy battyani, put up a valient effort in this one. mike moroco hit 3 longballs and drove in 4, with beh dropping in 6 homers for 6 rbi. however, it just wasnt enough as the wiggles were determined to lock up a first-round bye. nate tomko finished with 10 hits in 14 attempts with 4 homers and 11 rbi, as well as 4 double plays. his third d.p. of the game was his 100th of the season. katie kelly added 7 hits and 2 rbi, as did pat lackey. danielle hennon, in her stint with the wiggles, hit 5 of 8 shots. jeremy battyani and hennon became the first-ever teammates to play for both teams in one game. SCREAMIN SEAGULLS 10 HOT FUZZ 11 with nothing to play for except pride, hot fuzz still had enough in the tank to beat up on an understaffed screamin' seagull team to end their regular season on a high note. the seagulls had only terry hall and captain lee nespor in attendance, but were the beneficiaries of a trade that sent john davidson to their roster for a player to be named later, marking the third team in 7 games davidson suited up for. mike moroco ended the season in style, hitting 9 of 10 on his home court with 4 homers and 8 rbi, 3 double plays and a psyche out. bryan frankovich added 2 homers and three rbi, including the game-ending walk off solo shot with two gone in the 9th. the seagulls got a 6 for 11, 2 homer, 6 rbi day from terry hall. hall also chipped in 4 double plays. john davidson added 3 d.p. s and an assist. |
