SBL 2005, WEEK 7
JULY 3
THE BIG HOUSE

RETURN OF THE WEENISES  19
PJ & THE LADIES                      20
forced to play without nate tomko, their leader in nearly every way, the ladies had to rely on captain billy weisberg to get them by a tough weenis squad, and weisberg responded with his best game of the season.
bumping himself into the 2-hole in tomko's absence, weisberg hit on 8 of his 12 attempts with season highs in runs batted in (13) and homers (3) with a trifecta of double plays as well.
the ladies fell in a tiny 1-0 hole after the second inning, but busted out for 8 runs in the third, highlighted by a pair of weisberg 3-run jacks, to break the game open.  after being held hitless in the next stanza as the weenises pulled to within 9-5, pj&l put up innings of 3, 4 and 4 in the 5th thru seventh to once again take a commanding lead, this time by a 20-8 count.
the weenises still had fight left in them, however, and as weisberg sat out on defense his squad failed to turn a double play in the last 2 innings, and as a result team ween put up 5 and 6-run frames to close out the game and give the red and gold a scare.
pj nespor found the shot that had people talking player of the year a few weeks back, going 8 of 12 from the leadoff hole with a psyche out and a pair of double plays.  aryn christman played well, and blamed it on tomko not being there to yell, with an 8 for 12, 4 ribbie game.
shernisky continued to look like a rookie of the year in waiting with a 10 for 15, 2 homer, 10 rbi, 1 assist, 2 double play line.  dennis lackey added 7 hits and 5 ribbies.

THE FUPALOOTERS         21
TEAM KOOPA TROOPA  18
bryan frankovich's first win in a one on one scrum ever had koopa troopa feeling like this one was in the bag, but nobody could have expected the game the fupalooters got from seldom used jeremy battyani.
battyani's team high 9 runs batted in nearly doubled his previous output for the season, and his 7 hits was also a season high.  battani didn't do it alone, however, as each member of the dreary day blue contibuted.  brandon mckednry continued his late run at an all-star spot with an 8 for 13 game with 7 runs batted in, 3 double plays and an assist.  greg lackey had a team high 9 hits from the 1-hole, and jon biddle garnered 6 hits and 3 d.p.'s.
after absorbing an early koopa run that had them in a 6-1 hole, the fupalooters bounced back in the fourth with 6 runs to momentarily take a one-one lead.  tkt responded with 5 of their own in the bottom of the inning to make the count 11-7, but over the next 4 frames, team fupa would outscore team koopa by a 13-3 margin.
in the top of bottom of the ninth, needing 8 to tie, koopa came out swinging.  matt mcclelland got the ball rolling with his 6th hit of the game, a double, and his teammates would follow with 4 more base hits to make the score 21-18 with no outs.  brandon mckednry would provide the game-breaker, however, with his double play of erin hayden's double attempt.  down to their final out, koopa would fizzle as bryan frankovich would brick a homer attempt that would have tied the game.  hey, i guess it just wasn't his day.
koopa got an 8 for 12, 2 homer, 5 run batted in outing from mcclelland and a 7 ribbie performance from bryan frank.

TEAM KOOPA TROOPA               36
TRAIN ON TERRY SHERNISKY  19  (6 INNINGS)
reeling from their shocking loss to the fupalooter one game prior, it didn't take koopa long to get back on track.  in almost the exact same fashion the tots had beaten them 2 weeks earlier, tkt simply blew the former suede denim secret police/brooklyn bridges/train on ted's sister out of the water early and often.
a 21-run second inning from pat lackey's charges had the contest ugly within minutes.  the tots had looked good in thier first at-bat, and actually had a 5-1 lead after one, but the game became a laugher as koopa had one of those games.  theyfollowed up their 21-runner with innings of 5, 4, and 4 to outsprint the tots, who put up 19 runs in only 6 innings, a shooting display that would have won nearly every other game.
bryan frankovich made a run at a number of records, hitting 6 homers and driving in 18 rbi (1 off shelley goodpastor's single-game record) on 10 of 14 marksmanship with 2 double plays.  but i guess it wasn't his day, as the tots couldn't extend the game long enough to allow frankovich to win.  mike frankovich added a 10 for 14 game with 4 ribbies while matt mcclelland and pat lackey pounded out identical 10 for 15, 1 homer, 7 rbi lines.
for the tots, mikey moroco went 9 for 11 with a homer and 5 rbi.

RETURN OF THE WEENISES  24
JUKEBOX HERO                        22
a late run by a fairly stacked jukebox hero got them back into the game, but it was too little too late as the weenises were able to hold on for a 2-run win to level their season at 7-7.
the weenises were able to build a 24- 12 lead on the relatively strong jukebox team of battyani, hayden, elliott, picciotto and tomko over the first 8 and a half innings thanks to the resurgent play of jamie moroco, who broke out to the tune of 9 runs batted in on 11 of 15 shooting.  jukebox, however, made the weenises sweat a bit by plating 10 in their final at-bat.  jbh rattled off 7 consecutive hits before tomko a tomko miss slowed the rally.  billy picciotto then missed a homer 2 batters later that would have pulled his team to within 3, but jeff knight came off the bench to hit a huge 2-run homer to clear the board and give jukebox life.
tomko, however, would miss the middle triple he'd made a career of knocking down, and the weenises breathed a sigh of relief.
terry shernisky hit on 8 of 15 attempts with 7 rbi and 3 d.p.'s for the winners.  danielle hennon chipped in with 9 hits and 3 rbi, while dennis lackey added an 8 for 15, 5 rbi, 1 psyche out performance.
for the losers, tomko went 7 for 11 with a homer, 9 rbi and 2 double plays.

UNCLE JED'S POCKET WATCH  12
ANALISA GOODTHING                 10

aryn christman, who was traded to analisa goodthing from the ladies for elysa farrell prior to the match (only to be traded back later in the evening) battled shelley goodpastor in one of the greatest scrums the sbl has ever seen to kick off this hard-fought sbl match.  though christman prevailed in something like 10 minutes, it was goodpastor who ultimately came out on top, as her pocket watch squad earned a big win over their interconference rivals.
jed led from the onset, and although they were never able to pull away, then never gave up the lead they had after the first.  analisa pulled to within 11-10 after the 8th, but that would be all they would score as dank elly coerced billy picciotto into taking an ill-advised 2-run homer attempt with 1 out that would have knotted the game at 12.  instead, christman was forced to attempt a 2-out shot to bring her team to within one, and ended up cracking under the pressure as her new team bowed 12-10.
christman paced the losrd with a 9 for 14 game from the plate with a homer and 7 runs batted in.
as always, uncle jed was led by shelley goodpastor, who put in 9 of her 16 shots for 4 rbi.  dank elly and kip corbett posted 6 for 15 outings, with corbett driving in 5 and elly 3.  the jed men combined for 5 double plays.
THE FUPALOOTERS  29
PJ & THE LADIES       25
jon biddle tipped in pj nespor's only missed single of the day for the game ending double-play in a wild affair which saw the fupalooters blow an early lead only to come back and nearly blow a late one.
the fupalooters came out of the gate still high from their upset of koopa troopa, and broke off 3 runs in the top of the first on the strength of brandon mckendry's 2-run triple.  the ladies were unable to respond until the second, then they knocked down 5 hits in a row to pull to within 5-4.
after giving up one more to the fupalooters in the top of the third, the ladies grabbed their first lead of the game in the bottom of the inning, when aryn christman's triple attempt was tapped back home by pj nespor to spark a 3-run inning.  the ladies, now rolling, poured on 6 more in the 4th as weisberg connected on a 3-run homer to begin pulling away.
the fupalooters would soon come roaring back from their 11-17 hole, getting 4 in the 6th thanks to a mckendry 2-run jack.  2 more in the seventh would be followed by another 4 runs in the eighth and suddenly fupa had gone from 6 down to leading 21-15.
looking to spark their offense, the ladies went to their bench for the injured nate tomko.  tomko came in and immediately drilled a 2-run triple to pull his team back, and a weisberg 3-run homer knotted the score at 21 heading into the ninth.
the fupalooters pulled off one of the biggest innings of their season, if not the biggest, when the chips were down.  the inning statred with a mckednry single, and didn't end until 11 batters later when jeremy battyani finally missed to give fupa 3 outs.  in the meantime, team fupa tallied 8 big runs to nearly blow the ladies out of the game they'd been in control of for so long.
the ladies, however, had some left in their sails, and got to work on chipping away at the lead.  pj&l managed to collect 5 hits in a row before christman finally missed for out number one.  tomko reached on a triple that scored two, but biddle d.p.'d nespors next shot, ending the contest and shooting team fupa to their 4th win in a row.
greg lackey had himself a game for the fupalooters, going 12 of 15 from the dish with a pair of homers and 6 rbi.  jon biddle added 10 hits and 10 rbi with 5 double plays, while jeremy battyani stayed red hot thanks to a 6-hit, 7 rbi showing.  mckednry also chipped in with 8 hits and 6 rbi.
for the losers, nespor tallied 10 hits and 6 rbi, weisberg drove in 8, christman hit on 10 of 13 attempts, and tomko went 5 for 5 off the bench with 6 rbi.

JUKEBOX HERO                                9
UNCLE JED'S POCKET WATCH  26  (6 INNINGS)
uncle jed continued to look like the team we expected them to be at the beginning of the season, completing a 2-win week with a mercy-shortened beatdown of jukebox hero.
shelley goodpastor had her usual performance- a 10 for 15, 10 rbi game-, but jed was able to dominate thanks to the solid play of dank elly and kip corbett, who have suddenly come to life in this 2005 season.  corbett dropped through 8 shots and 5 rbi to go with his pair of double plays, and elly had a jaw-dropping 12 for 15, 3 homer, 11 rbi, 1 dp, 1 psyche out performance.
jed scored in every inning, putting jukebox away with 7 each in the 4th and 6th frames.  they went on runs of at least 5 hits 4 times in the 6-inning contest, and stranded only 4.  jukebox, meanwhile, put on another decent showing, but continued to be hamstrung by their inconsistent offense, and as a result dropped to 2-12 on the year.
for jbh, danielle hennon had a team-high 4 hits, and ben smith drove in 3 with a homer.

ANALISA GOODTHING                18
TRAIN ON TERRY SHERNISKY  33 (7 INNINGS)
the tots continued to show off one of the most prolific offenses in the league, putting up 33 in only 7 innings of work to tear apart the recently restructured analisa goodthing.
goodthing, who had only 2 players for the affair, used a last-second trade to get danielle hennon away from dennis lackey in exchange for a handjob.  however, wily AGT captain ben elliott only needed hennon's services for the 20-minute game, so he simply refused and the trade was vetoed by the league offices immediately after the conclusion of week 7.  elliott, however, got his third player for the time frame he needed and dennis lackey was left blue-balled.
the trade proved useless, however, as hennon tallied only 5 hits in 12 at-bats, not nearly enough to keep her team in a game againt the high-flying tots.
after failing to score in the top of the inning, agt watched the tots plate 7 in the bottom of the inning as mikey morco banged a 3-run homer and ben smith a 2-run job.  though they would be held scoreless in the second and third, team tot would explode in the middle innings.  a 6-run fourth in which train on terry knocked down 8 consecutive shots was bettered one inning later when they went off for 10 runs.
analisa would try in vain to keep pace, but would be outscored in every inning from the third on out, which is really no way to win a baseketball game.
when katie kelly connected on a 3-bagger for the tots 9th straight hit in the seventh, she brought in ben smith who carried the game-winning run.  the refs stopped the contest before analisa could bleed to death, thank god.
moroco finished up his big day with an 11 for 14, 3 homer, 12 rbi, 1 assist, 1 double play contest.  ben smith added 10 hits, 2 homers and 11 ribbies, while jeff knight paced his squad's defense with 3 double plays.
picciotto drained 5 homers and drove in 12 for analisa, who slipped to 6-8 on the season.  the tots squared their mark at 7-7.

GAME OF THE WEEK:  THE FUPALOOTERS OVER THE LADIES (lots of lead changing, good stuff)
PLAYER OF THE WEEK: MIKEY MOROCO (i think mikey may actually be one of the best players in the league.  he just doesn't get a lot of dap)
TEAM OF THE WEEK:  THE FUPALOOTERS (i don't think any team in history has beaten the top two teams in the same week this late in the season)
