The Friday Hangover

Short column this week. Just a few random thoughts and updated Style Points Standings. As you may know, I've taken an intership working for Safari Telecom, a (you guessed it) telecommunications company who happens to be installing wireless data and voice networks for the U.S. Open in Oakmont. I started this week and will be working even more next week, so you'll be lucky to get anything then. If any cool stories come up or if everybody's homepage "accidentally" becomes the main page for this site, I will let you guys know. As for Sundays, I expect to make it on time this week, but either very, very late next week or possibly not at all.

Random Thoughs For the Week:

  • In something that isn't all that uncommon anymore, Hot Fuzz recently became the seventh team in SBL history to win three games in a regular season week. What makes it a little interesting is that, by defeating conference rival Nappy Headed Ho's, they prevented the Ho's from accomplishing the same feat. Not gaining a one game advantage in the conference plus the tiebreaker are nice perks or anything. More good news for the Fuzz: every team in SBL history, with one exception, who has won three games in a regular season week, has advanced to the SBL finals, including three champions. The only team that didn't advance was the Purple Undependables of 2001, who lost to eventual champion NAACP in the semifinals. NAACP and the team they beat in the finals, the No Talent Ass Clowns, were two other teams to do what Hot Fuzz did in Week Two.
  • Who the hell is Timmy Martin? What team does he play for? His stats don't look too bad though, excpet for the .333 average in 24 at-bats. Of his eight hits, five are homers and two are solo shots (as evidenced by the two style ponits he has). You have to respect that. Eight RBIs and 4 double plays aren't too bad either. The "how many times I've met him" stat remains at 0.
  • Upon my arrival during the 9th inning of my team's only game for the week, I heard rumblings about the solo homer losing its meaning. Say it ain't so!! I'm glad that it gained it's luster back with Lee Nespor's walk-off job during the Screamin' Seagulls/Jukebox Hero contest. If the trend continues of too many people shooting solo homers, I will have no choice but to remove it from Automatic-Style Point status. They are just too sacred.
  • Hot Fuzz is 6-0. For people who think they may run the table, think again. The next two weeks are not kind to Bryan Frankovich's squad as they play the Nappy Headed Ho's twice, Kathleen Turner Overdrive once and PJ & the Ladies once. If they can make it through the first three of those unscathed, a showdown with PJ & the Ladies awaits. Would you want to put an undefeated streak on the line against them? I know I wouldn't. I don't care how bad they are. They're still PJ & the Ladies.
  • Style Points Standings (after Week Three):
    1. Terry Hall..............10
    2. Billy Weisberg.........7
    3. Matt McClelland.....6
    4. Aryn Christman.......4
    5t. Lenny Christ...........3
    5t. Lee Nespor............3

    Rookies:
    1t. Jordana..................2
    1t. Timmy Martin.........2
    3t. All Others...............0

As you can tell, I did the standings a little differently this week. I only put up the top five, because quite frankly, I didn't feel like sorting through the 30 or so names and putting them on one long list. I do have everybody's up to date style points information on an Excel file, so if somebody has a burning desire to know his or her style point totals through this week, ask me and I can let you know. Also, the standings for rookies are posted. I may name my own rookie of the year through Style Points, just because I can. I will probably only post the top three rookies every week. This is likely the format the standings will remain in for the rest of the year. Towards the end, I will post the bottom five again, but for now, that would include nearly everybody not in the top five, defeating the purpose of posting only that many. Nobody currently sits with any less than -2 Style Points. There are many who sit at -1, 0, or 1.
